The 2017 Metropolitan Fashion Week Closing Gala and Fashion Awards was held on October 5, 2017 at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center. It featured one-of-a-kind avant-garde and haute couture designs created by national and international fashion designers who are inspired by the artwork from the J. Paul Getty Museum.
Metropolitan Fashion Week producer and director Eduardo Khawam recounted the struggles that he went through in life, in order to achieve success. He told the captive audience his personal story about perseverance, and he said, “Never give up on your dreams!”
This year’s Metropolitan Fashion Week Project Imagination goal is to raise over 1,000,000 school supplies for underprivileged schools. All school supplies collected are being donated to schools affected by natural disasters in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
Emily Buelow, a fashion design graduate from Woodbury University, expressed her reactions to the fashion show: “My first time at the Metropolitan Fashion Show was surely one I will remember. Each design was captivating in its own personal way. One of things I enjoyed most about the show was how the fashion designers interpreted pieces of artwork that are displayed at the Getty Museum. Being a fashion designer myself, it is not always easy to draw inspiration from a piece of art. You can spend hours researching what the piece is made of and what the artist intended to present, but in the end you are left with your own interpretation of the artwork. It is with your own ideas and interpretation that you as a designer, must challenge yourself to create your own masterpiece not to be shared through words, but through the dazzling lights at the end of a runway and through a roaring crowd craving for more of your interpretation. I found myself sitting in the audience wishing there were more looks inspired by the pieces of artwork I saw at the show. I look forward to seeing new interpretations at the Metropolitan Fashion show in 2018.”
